Congreso - Post 6

We were able to skype with Allison on Christmas Day and she was exuberant!  She looked great and sounded even better and was obviously happy.  It was a joy to see and hear her but more than that, it was wonderful to know she is well and enjoying missionary work in Argentina.  Allison asked we pass along her love you you all and her gratitude for the emails and letters - keep them coming!  Here is her letter for this week and a list of things she'd like if anyone is inclined to send a care package (see Contact Info post for instructions).

Well I didn't do a general e-mail last week because I got to SKYPE my FAMILY on Christmas day :)  Yes I cried. I always cry :)  It was a wonderful Christmas.  Christmas Eve we had a HUGE meeting with the whole mission together.  It was really great :)  President Ayre got up to start the meeting and then he said "Is Hermana Scarlett here?  Where is she?" I raised my hand and then he asked me to give the opening prayer!  Wow, I only have 6 weeks in the mission and he wants me to give a prayer in front of the WHOLE MISSION!?!  There are 280+ missionaries and I have to prey in front of all of them in SPANISH!?!  Of course I said yes and did it and it was fine :)

They then showed us a video that they put together for the mission to watch.  It started off with a jib-jab video of the faces of the senior missionary couples on the bodies of a mariachi band singing and dancing to the song Feliz Navidad.  Everyone was ROLLING!  Next they showed the clip from the Grinch movie where the grinch´s heart grew 3x bigger and talked about how the Gospel can change people´s lives and had a slideshow of all the baptisms the past couple months, so we had a white christmas (all the people in their white baptismal clothes.  Felt like I had to explain that one because when I first heard it i was SO confused!  I was like, there is NO WAY it´s going to snow here!)  I cried.  Then they showed the piano guys video O come Emmanuel.  It was super good.  I cried even more.  Then president talked to us and talked about all the different kinds of missionaries we have in the mission.  We have missionaries from 21 countries serving in the Buenos Aires North Mission!  Then he asked all the convert missionaries to stand up, then all the missionaries who were there because of the age change, then a lot of different types of people.  He then talked about how grateful he is that each one of us are here and each one of us had to make sacrifices to be here.  I cried even more.  It was really great and I loved every second of it.

After that meeting we all had lunch together.  They had all the Hermanas go sit down first and as I was heading to the tables I heard someone yell my name and I turned around and there was Elder Hicks!  He was an Elder who was visa waiting in my ward back home and at the same time I was serving as a ward missionary.  He´s way cool.  Well he got his visa and left and then I get my mission call not long after.  Everyone told me "That´s the same mission Elder Hicks is in!" So it was cool to see a familiar face and talk a little bit.  We all ate and chatted and then we did a white elephant, all the gifts provided by the mission.  It was the Left Right story that mom does every year.  All the Hermanas got scarves, even some of the Elders too :)  It was a really fun day.
Christmas Eve we also had permission to stay out until 10:30 with the members.  Here in Argentina they celebrate very differently.  They don´t sleep at night, they stay up ALL NIGHT!  Christmas begins at midnight. But we spent Christmas Eve in the home of Paul Pizarro, who is our ward mission leader and we ate a TON! His brother, Gustavo, loves to cook and feed us missionaries.  So we chatted and ate and listened to Christmas music and then we went back to our apartment.  At midnight the fireworks started.  It was way cool!  Everyone was awake and shooting off fireworks from the streets, from the tops of the buildings.  It was magnificent!

In the morning we opened our presents and prepared for the day.  We went back to the house of Paul and Gustavo and ate some more and skyped our FAMILIES!  When mom answered I just started to cry.  Then they all sat around the computer and mom sat down and had a list of questions to ask me.  It was like a Question and answer session.  Kind of like a panel of judges or something :)  It was really nice to see the faces and hear the voices of my family again :)¨ It was really funny because every 10 minutes Paul popped in and said "Merry Christmas" or "Hi Family" or something.  He was so excited to have the missionaries in his house skyping their families and he was even more excited that he could say a couple english phrases to them :)  He and Gustavo would come in and be like "Tell your family I said this"  But I made them talk to mom in Spanish so she could practice :p  They really enjoyed that too :)  And it was funny because sometimes I would talk to them and start saying something to my family but I had to pause and transition my brain back to English.  It was just a really great hour to be able to talk with them :)

As for this week, we have an INVESTIGATOR (someone who is interested in learning more about the gospel of Jesus Christ and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints)!  We were walking to visit someone and I just had this thought that we should go visit a contact that works outside the Coto Grocery Store.  I voiced this to Hermana Mowry and she agreed.  So we headed down the street when this lady came up to us and greeted us in English!  We asked her where she was from and she's from here in Argentina.  Then she looked at our name tags and said that she wanted to meet with us and talk about God and what we believe.  WHAT!?! That´s never happened before.  But then she was like "But you're probably too busy."  We replied "No! We would LOVE to talk with you about God and what we believe."  She then set a cita con nosotras (appointment with us) for later that afternoon.  Oh man, We were so excited!

Her name is Santa Lo´Scrudado (Not like Santa Clause, Santa signifies Saint in Spanish). We met in a little restaurant and we shared the message of the restoration with her and she was just soaking it all in and had so many questions.  It was just amazing.  We had Diego Gomez, a member, with us and he was such a HUGE help.  When we have a member at a lesson it really makes all the difference.  She is really concerned about her brother and the road in life he´s taking along with what´s happening in the world. She wants to help the people in the streets and the people who are drug addicts and the people who are poor and don´t have much.  We introduced her to the Book of Mormon and she is really excited to read it and pray about it and we invited her to church and she accepted. We also invited her to be baptized but she wants to know more and be sure before she makes that commitment. I´m very confident that she will receive her answer and desire to be baptized. She really is searching for something more that can help her in her life and we have it!  She came to church and really liked it and we are going to visit her again tonight and we are so excited.  What a miracle and a blessing she is!

Something New about me is I´m really enjoying our 30 min of exercise time every morning.  I fear I may become and Exercise nut while I´m here. I still eat a lot but that´s because the members are trying to make me fat and I'm always wanting to eat more because we walk a whole lot. Oh well!

Love you all!

Congreso - Post 5

Hi everyone, this is Mom with a few editorial comments.

First, every six weeks, on Tuesdays, are transfers in Allison's mission.  This is when the Mission President decides which companions stay together or get switched, and if switched, who moves to which area within the mission.  Not all missionaries are switched and moved each transfer - usually a missionary is moved to a new area every 4-6 months and stay with the same companion every 2-3 months.  This past Tuesday were transfers.

Second, every Monday is Preparation Day aka P-Day.  This is the one day a week when missionaries take care of temporal needs - do laundry, go grocery shopping, clean apartments, go sightseeing, write home, recreational fun, etc.  The rest of the week is focused on serving others and teaching the gospel of Jesus Christ.  So, when transfer week comes around, all missionaries in the mission take their P-Day on Tuesday rather than Monday so those moving or getting switched use that P-Day to pack up and move to their new areas and get settled without losing a day of doing the Lord's work.

Why all this - well Allison's email came late this past week which is causing this blog post to get done late.  Sorry to the regular readers and just know every six weeks, the blog will be late.  Oh - I'm having to do more and more editing too.  Allison's emails have horrid spelling and grammar now - which only means her spanish is getting much better!  And now, here is the latest from our Hermana Allison Scarlett :)

So today was the big day of transfers!  (Drumroll pleaseeeeee)  WE ARE STAYING IN CONGRESO!!!!!  Last night we got the call that all 4 of us Hermanas are staying here in Congreso.  We are all SUPER stoked (excited).  We feel like we have so much more work to do here and we are ready to hit the ground running and have some miracles happen these next 6 weeks.

As for this past week we have been working really well with the less-active members.  We´ve visited Andres and Milagros who are awesome :)  We were visiting with them but their cuadra (city block) didn´t have energy (electricity) so we were sitting around 2 candles in their living room talking and mentioned that transfers were this week.  Milagros said "we don't want you to leave.  You´re our missionaries."  Oh man my heart just melted!  We´ve challenged them to read the Libro de Mormon (The Book of Mormon) in one year.  I told them that I read it in 2 months, so they can do it in 12 months :)  They are just super great!  I´m going to miss them when I eventually leave Congreso.

Another less-active member we´re working with is Alfredo Morrency.  He´s a super tall, skinny man from Haiti.  He´s in his mid 30s but totally looks like he´s early 20s.  He served a mission there in Haiti and is here in Buenos Aires studying and working.  We had a really good chat/lesson with him and he came to church on Sunday.  He´s a very calm super nice guy and we´re excited for our next visit with him this afternoon!

We are also working with Jose Navarro.  He´s 24, from Colombia, and is here studying and living with 2 of his friends.  He wants to serve a mission and go to the temple along with many other big goals.  We´re helping him to do the little things that he needs to do, such as reading the scriptures, going to church, paying tithing, in order to achieve his big goals.  He has such a big desire and he´s so dang busy!  Everyone is so dang busy here!  But we can see him doing great things.  But by small and simple things do great things come to pass.

Also, we have the Familia MiƱo.  They usually come the first hour of church and then leave because the son who has the car doesn't want to stay.  We've been working with them and especially their other son, Freddie.  He is such a goofy guy.  He is so animated always having something to say and it´s never boring when he´s around.  We were meeting with their family and we were talking about doing the good things and he was like "Well I'm not a bad  person.  I don´t going around doing bad things."  Then he looked at me and said "What do you think?"  SO I said, "NO, you´re not a bad person, but we can always do better.  For example, before my mission I didn't read my scriptures EVERY day."  Everyone gasped - It was really funny!  I continued, "But now that I'm reading every day I've seen all the blessings it´s bringing into my life and realized all of the blessings I missed out on before because I wasn't being exactly obedient.  Heavenly Father blesses us according to our obedience.  Now that I know these things I´m going to read my scriptures every day in order to receive those blessings.  It´s not that you´re doing bad things.  It´s just that there are always better things you can be doing."  He is now coming with us on our visits and he got his family to come to church and stay all 3 hours which was a MIRACLE!  And he really enjoyed himself and he is really going strong and is just a fireball right now!  It´s quite amazing to see.

Friday night the ward had a Christmas activity and it was super great!  The youth decorated the church and it was absolutely beautiful!  Lots of members, less-actives, and non-members were all there together fellowshipping and coming together for the holidays.  They cooked asado, which is argentine barbecue and it´s LA MEJOR (THE BEST)!  Andres and Milagros came and they really enjoyed themselves.  It really brought the ward closer together and I feel like many good things are going to come from that night.  We are working on strengthening our relationships with the members in the ward (a ward is the local congregation) and strengthening the ward so that we can all work together to crecer la obra misional aca en Congreso (to grow the missionary work here in Congreso) and I´m so happy and so excited to be a part of it for at least one more transfer.  Miracles are going to happen, i can feel it.

Love you all!

Congreso - Post 4

Hello everyone!

So this is my last week of this transfer! QUE LOCO!  I´ve been here for 5 weeks.  Sometimes I feel like I´ve been here forever and sometimes I feel like I just got here yesterday!  To be honest I really don´t remember much of what happened this week.  We still don´t have any investigators.  It´s frustrating because we are working hard and every day are thinking about what we can do better as missionaries to find those who need this message in their lives.  It´s hard in the city and we realized that we need to strengthen the ward here and help them to have the vision of missionary work in this area because without their help, missionary work here is next to impossible.  So we´ve been visiting with the members and teaching lessons about la obra missional and helping them to remember why this gospel is so important to them and help them to have the desire to share the joy and happiness that this gospel brings and how important it is for everyone to have the chance to hear this gospel. Also, the ward is working on putting together a ward mission plan to help the ward work together to crecer the obra missional aca en congreso (grow the missionary work here in Congresso).  We´re really excited to work better with the members and ward leaders here!  I just hope we stay here another transfer to help continue the growth in the missionary work and work with the ward to bring more souls to Christ.

Hermana Mowry and our
Littlest Christmas Tree
We´re still working with quite a few of the less-active members here and we´ve had some really AWESOME lessons with them-full of the Spirit!  We are working with Andres y Milagros.  They are a brother and sister that got baptized when they were very young and became inactive very quickly because they didn´t really have the support of their family.  Right now he´s 19 and she´s 22. It´s crazy to think I´m the same age as Andres!  We were teaching them the Plan of Salvation and talking about what we need to do in this life.  One of which is keeping the commandments so I mentioned the law of chastity, and he was like what´s that?  SO we set another appointment to teach him the law of chastity.  It´s so crazy that we're the same age but I'm on a mission teaching him about the law of chastity.  It was a really good lesson though, both of them were.

I got the first 2 boxes on Tuesday from Mom!  Muchas Gracias!  I finished off the bag of white cheddar popcorn yesterday.  I made it last 6 days! haha you should be so proud of me :)  I am doing pretty well rationing out the rest of the edible things you sent me.  Our apartment is now very much christmas-afied and it´s awesome :)  We rearranged our apartment for the 2nd time this week and now it´s super spacious and awesome.

En realidad (Really) I have no idea what else to tell you all.  I´m doing well and enjoying my time here!  I miss  you all and wish you a very merry christmas season and will see you in about 15 months!

Lots of Love,

Hermana Allison Scarlett

Congreso - Post 3

A miracle happened this week!  We found Maria!

So here's the back story.  While we were in the MTC our Teacher, Hermano Call, had us create our dream investigator.  I created a woman named Maria.  The description I wrote for her was this:
How met: Friend of a member who was referred to us.
Needs:  Single mother who needs guidance and comfort.  She is trying her best and has strong faith. She needs strength and to know about the atonement, that families can be together forever, and that she can do all things through Christ.
Our teacher told us that if we had the faith we would find our dream investigator.  And this week we did!

We were at the door of a less-active member's house to have a lesson but he wasn't home.  I was a little frustrated because that seemed to be the theme for our appointments.  We were about to leave when a motorcycle zoomed by and the woman riding on the back yelled ¨Hermanas!¨ The motorcycle pulled over on the other side of the road and the woman motioned for us to come over, so we did.  She was a member from another ward and asked us if we knew her friend Maria who lives in ward area.  We didn't so this woman shared with us that her friend Maria has met with the Hermanas before and asked us to visit Maria.  Then she whipped out her phone and called Maria and made an appointment for us the following day.  We talked to Maria on the phone and told her how excited we were to meet her and she was very excited too :)

The next day we went to her house and met with her and she is exactly the dream investigator I made  up in the MTC!  We were able to talk to her about the Libro de Mormon (Book of Mormon). She has read it and has a testimony of its truthfulness!  In the past, she wasn't able to attend church because of work (which is the problem for pretty much everybody here in the city); However, right now she doesn't have a job and is able to come to church with us and is looking for a  job that will allow her to come to church every week.  It was such an amazing lesson.  We sang Nearer my God to Thee and talked about how God. He is always there and we can get closer or further from Him just by the choices we make. She has such a strong desire to become closer to Him.  Maria set a baptismal date and we are teaching her all the lessons.  She is like a dream come true!

Miracles happen everyday we just need to recognize them.  They aren't always as obvious as a woman yelling at us on a motorcycle, but they do happen.  Waking up everyday is a miracle.  The Lord truly does send us tender mercies and miracles.  Another example - we live in the same apartment building as the Sister Training Leaders and yesterday morning we did exchanges with them - I was with Hermana Dunn.  We walked to an appointment with a less-active member passing by a river and I felt like I was back home for just a moment.  I felt like I was looking over the sound in the Outer Banks so I took a moment to enjoy it.  The member we visited also had a dog who was a rottweiler that looked just like Chester (the dog we had while I was growing up).  thile I was petting the dog, she looked at me and put her paw on my lap just like chester used to do.  I just smiled because it was something so small and yet it was a tender mercy of the Lord.

Something else awesome!  I finished reading the Book of Mormon this morning that I started reading in the MTC with the topics.  Ohmylanta I have learned so much!  And I started reading a new copy this morning marking a new set of topics -  I'm excited to learn even more!  Why have I never studied with a topic before?  It makes it so much more meaningful and fruitful :)

I am loving it here.  They work may not always be perfect like I want it to be but I´m doing what my Heavenly Father wants me to be doing and I´m doing the best that I can.  I love the work. I love the people.  I love my mission.  I love this Gospel with all my heart.  Everytime I feel down, I just read my mission scripture again and remember why I´m here (Alma 29:9-10).

I Love You ALL  <3

From A Good Samaritan

Post from Mom - I received this email along with pictures this week and thought it was worth sharing.  It is a comfort to hear from others about your child.  Another tender mercy from the Lord!

Dear Parents,

I have attached pictures of the missionaries (elders and sisters) that we were fortunate to travel with from Atlanta to Buenos Aires on November 4th.  My husband and I along with our 17 year old son were heading to Rosario to pick up our son Elder Peter Welsh who was completing his mission on November 5th.  It was such a delight to travel with these enthusiastic missionaries as they made their way to Argentina.  I'm sure that you heard from your son/daughter that our plane was delayed for nearly 2 hours while we were all on board.  Those missionaries did not waste any time using their enthusiasm and language skills to share the gospel and their spirit with their neighboring passengers.  It was a beautiful site to see and a wonderful way for us to start our trip.  You should be very proud.

I'm sorry this has taken me so long to get these pictures sent off.  I intended to do it while we were in Argentina, but my access to the internet was not as consistent as I would have liked, and our son kept us on the run the whole time we were there.  I have about 50 pictures taken by me and my son at the airport and on the plane (and one at the Buenos Aires Temple).  Some are blurry, but I'm sending them anyways because, as a mom, I know that even a blurry picture of your missionary is a treasure.

I am happy to have my son home, but I am going to miss his wonderful emails and the blessings that come from having a missionary serving.  Enjoy your next 16-22 months.  They are priceless.

Congreso - Post 2

Missionary Work is Hard.

Hermana Scarlett and Hermana Mowry (Trainer)
in front of El Congresso - The Congress Building
It seems like nobody here wants to talk to us or has time for us.  We make appointments and most of them fall through.  None of the people we teach are progressing.  I feel like we´re working in circles and we´re not going anywhere or getting anything done.  I´m here to help people find peace and joy and happiness and comfort through Jesus Christ and his restored Gospel.  I only want to give them the greatest gift God has given his children. I want to help people feel the immense love he has for them, no matter their situation.  Heavenly Father loves his children and wants nothing more than for us to come back to him.  My job is to help them with that.  To help them do the things they need to do in order to return back to our Heavenly Father.  That´s hard to do when nobody is listening to you or answering you and letting you into their homes to share a message that can help them eternally.  I am working everyday to grow and act in faith when I talk to people.  I pray everyday to be able to follow the guidance of the Holy Spirit and do what my Heavenly Father needs me to do in order to help His children.  It´s hard.  We fasted Friday and Saturday to find someone and to receive revelation on what we should do.

I just heard Elder Jeffery R. Holland speak!

On Saturday we had a huge meeting.  All 3 of the Buenos Aires Missions and the missionaries in the Buenos Aires MTC were there.  Elder Jeffrey Holland, one of the 12 apostles, came to speak to us.  I´ve always wanted to see Elder Jeffrey R. Holland in person!  It was an amazing experience and I received a lot of confirmation, answers, and revelation.  He spoke to us about personal conversion and how important it is for EVERY MEMBER to have a strong personal conversion to the Gospel, to Jesus Christ and our Heavenly Father. If we realize that we are LITERALLY Children of our Heavenly Father and have faith in His Gospel, living righteously to will come naturally. When we are truly converted, we will not be able to, nor want to turn away from Him.

Elder Holland said ¨I cannot promise you [as a missionary] one single baptism or one single convert.  Actually I can promise you one convert, and that is yourself.¨ No matter how hard this mission is and how many people reject me and how frustrated I get when our investigators aren't progressing, I always have one progressing convert, I always have one who is keeping their covenants with their heavenly father, one who has the desire to do what is right, and that is myself.  It doesn´t matter what happens to those around me because I have a personal conversion to this Gospel.  I know without a doubt that it is true.  I know that I can always turn to my Heavenly Father and he will help me, because he loves me.

I am so grateful for this difficult time and opportunity because Heavenly Father is refining me and making me into the person He needs in order to serve Him and His children.

As for all the questions about mail and packages, My companion said it takes about a month for mail to get here and vice versa.  If you´re expecting a letter from me, you´ll get it, it´s just gonna take a while:)  As for things to send in packages, pancake mix, candy, peanut butter, nutella, velveeta mac n cheese, grits, brownie mix, cake mix.  Just any food that is delicious and will last 1 month in a box would be amazing!

I love and miss you all  :) Ciao!

Congreso - Post 1

Hola amigos y familia!

SO Today is my seventh day in Argentina (November 12, 2013)!  I am really enjoying myself.  The first 2 days were really rough but once we started getting to work I was fine.  I am really enjoying being surrounded by Spanish.  Everyone I talk to says I speak pretty well.  But my problem is that It is hard to understand what everyone is saying!! They all speak so fast!

SO A miracle happened my third day here.  We were buying something in a store and a young man walked in behind us.  We were there for a while and he saw our name tags and asked us if we were from a church, we said yes, and the next words out of his mouth were "Puedo ser bautizado?" which means "Can I be baptized?"  All I could say was "SI! SI!"  I had no idea what else he said except that his name is Joseph.  My companion, Hermana Mowry was able to talk to him more while I just stood there in shock, but extremely happy.  First, because I understood his first full sentence, and second because someone just walked up to us and asked to be baptized!  I´m betting that doesn't happen very often.  Sad thing though, he doesn't live in our area, but he works in our area, and he works a lot.  So we gave the reference to our zone leaders and we visited him at his work and I gave him a Book of Mormon and was able to explain to him what it was.  He is so ready to accept and live the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

We have been visiting several other people but none of them are progressing and keeping commitments.  We also visit a lot of members who are not actively attending church.  We have two members that come with us to lessons a lot.  Hermano Prado is a short Peruvian man and he is so funny and nice.  He tries to help me speak and understand what´s going on.  Yesterday we had a member named Valentin come with us and he´s from Bolivia and I like talking to him because he talks much slower than everyone else, so I can pretty much follow what he´s saying.  I held a whole conversation with him in Spanish! It Was Awesome!

Also, yesterday we were waiting outside of McDonalds (Yes they haves those! And Subways too!) for Hermano Prado to meet up with us. My Companion had just given away a pamphlet then turned to me and said "It´s your turn."   CRAP!  Who do I talk to?  Everyone is walking so quickly!  Then this man and woman walked by with a beautiful Golden Retriever. The man went into McDonalds and the woman was just standing there with her dog waiting.  SO I went over and started talking to her with her about her dog, pet the dog and then introduced myself as a missionary. I then gave her a pamphlet about the Restoration and described what it was and what we believe.  She seemed curious and wanted to know more so we got their number, address, and a appointment to visit them and share our message.  I´m so excited to see them again!  Missionary Work is awesome!

SO yeah I am really enjoying meeting all the people and getting to know them and the area.  I´m in Congresso which Is pretty much the middle of  the Capital, Casa Rosada, where the Presidenta (woman president) lives. The Congreso Building and the Obelisque (which looks like the Washington Monument) are ALL in my area! Que Chevre!

I am learning a lot.  I love having so much study time in my schedule.  I'm still reading the Book of Mormon with the three subjects and I am learning so much about faith!  I just finished Alma with all of the war chapters and I always thought the war chapters were the worst.  I mean what can you learn about the gospel in the war chapters?  But they are filled with people acting on faith and being delivered.  The 2000 stripling warriors had so much faith that the Lord would deliver, that not a single one was killed.  There were so many times that people thought there was no way they would be able to fight and get out of bondage, but they fought for their liberty and the liberty of their families with all of their Faith in God  - and He provided a way for them, every time.  I have underlined the phrase "according to their faith" so many times in the Book of Mormon.  It is not enough just to ask God and then continue on with whatever.  We need to have faith that he will answer us and give us what we need, and he will.  He will help us "According to our Faith"

I am so grateful for the Gospel and how much peace and happiness it brings into my crazy life and I´m so excited to continue the work of salvation and share the Gospel with everyone.

Hermana Allison Scarlett

Arrived in Argentina!

This post is written by Mom from bits and pieces of emails and phone calls during Allison's travels to Argentina.

Monday November 4th
Leaving the MTC - Before the sun is up!!!!

  • Early morning - got up, packed last minute things, said our goodbyes and boarded a bus for the hour long drive from Provo to the Salt Lake City Airport.
  • At Airport was checking in luggage and her large bag was overweight by 4 lbs. Attendant suggested she remove 4 lbs of things and put them in her carry-on bag.  The only things she could easily remove was a t-shirt and pair of pants, hardly 4 lbs, but she repacked those in her carry on then hefted the large suitcase back on the scale - 50 lbs. even!!! Tender mercy and savings of $75!!!
  • Group (30 missionaries flying together all the way to Argentina).  Allison cannot get her phone card to work while attempting to call me.  Nice man (we called him an angel) offered Allison his phone to use to call home.  Nice light chat - Sara and Johnny came out of class to talk with her too!
  • I got home at 4:30 expecting call number 2 from Allison around 5pm.  5pm, no call.  5:30pm, no call. 6pm, no call.  Began to fear that a second call wouldn't happen for some unknown reason.  6:20 my phone rings and I hear Allison "Mom?!?!?" I answer that it was me and she began to cry.  The group boards their plane in SLC and sit for an hour before it is announce there are engine problems and another plane will be required for the flight.  By the time they get in the air, almost 2 hours of their layover was gone.  They arrive in Atlanta and realize their connecting flight is on the opposite side of the airport. The group runs through the airport (8 sisters and 22 elders), pass the only BoJangles in the airport without stopping for seasoned fries, and get to their gate with just under an hour before take off.  Allison looks for a pay phone to call home - there are none in that concourse.  A nice woman (we called her an angel too) walked up and offered Allison the use of her phone - thus the tears were tears of joy and gratitude.  This call was much shorter so the other missionaries could use the phone to call their families.  At 7:40pm, Allison's flight left for Buenos Aires Argentina.
Tuesday November 5th
  • Flight arrived in Buenos Aires at 6:55am.  All but six of the group continued on to their missions via connecting flights, trains or bus rides. Most of the group went to Mendoza and the rest to Rosario (I think).
  • That afternoon, I received this note via email:

Dear Family,
We are thrilled to report that your daughter, Sister Scarlett, has finally arrived safely in her mission this morning here in Buenos Aires.  She was picked up at the airport, and after a brief tour of Buenos Aires was brought to the mission home for a luncheon, followed by an interview with the President.  You should expect to hear from your missionary on her next P-day which will be Monday, November 11th.  Thank you for your prayers and support.

  • Unexpectedly, Allison sent out a short email to a few family members. She shared:

I´m in Argentina!  It didn't hit me until I got my trainer and left the mission house.  It´s so different here. My area is called Congresso and it´s all in the city. I´ve been here a day and haven't even taught anyone yet.  It´s not at all what I thought it would be like.  Everything looks old, people drive like maniacs, our apartment isn't what I thought it would be like.  Where am I?  Thank goodness my trainer speaks english. I am struggling but I know I can do this.  Heavenly Father doesn't give us anything we can´t handle without his help.  I just need to get to work and trust in my Heavenly Father and I know I can do this.  Please encourage everyone to send mail - its the best. I LOVE YOU!

Hermana Allison Scarlett

So the rest of the week, we've been praying for her quick acclimation to her new home for 18 months.  It was heartening to hear, after her culture shock statements, that she knows

she can do this with the help of her Heavenly Father.  What a strong and faithful woman of God!

MTC-Last Post!

I'm going to Argentina!!
So this is my last post from the USA!  Argentina, here I come - I'm so excited!!!  Last Monday morning another district left for the mission field.  Hermana Hickman and I woke up at 4AM to take Hermana Cattich to where she needed to be and say goodbye.  I sure miss them but they are doing amazing things and my turn is next!

Lumber sniffing :)
Tuesday night we went over to the Main Campus for a large group devotional (Which was awesome).  So I hope everybody knows how much I love the smell of wood and lumber, and if you don't, now you do :)  There was some lumber outside the entrance to where the devotional was so I sniffed it and Elder Taylor was like "You love the smell of lumber?! I do too!" So we just stood there for a couple minutes smelling the lumber. Awesome!  Before the devotional we saw Elder George and his companion and talked with them and then they told us they were getting 12 new hermanas on wednesday and had no idea what to do!  They've been looking for sister training leaders to help them so they asked my companion and I to help them.  We were more than willing!  After the devotional on our way out I heard two elders yell "Cousin!" So I turned around and there were these two giants of Elders just looking at me and smiling.  I was SO CONFUSED!  I said "I don't know you or who you are."  They explained that they were in my cousin's district (Elder George). Then we rode a school bus back to West Campus!  It was my first time being on a real school bus!  So we photographed the special moment.
Riding my first School Bus!

Wednesday We got to host the new missionaries coming to West Campus and I got to host Sarah Edwards! She went to SVU with me and we worked at Jonzzey's together.  She is so nice and we were excited to see each other again. That night we helped Elder (Steven) George's zone with their new hermanas.  We pretty much organized their orientation meeting for them because they had no idea what to do, then we took everyone on a tour of campus.  The we took the hermanas back to their apartment and had some hermana-hermana time and answered some of their questions.  It was so fun to serve and help another zone and spend some time with my cousin, Elder George. That night I learned that Elder George's whole district calls me cousin, which explained Tuesday night's incident with the two giant elders.  So now I have two zones full of new cousins!

Thursday We had in-field orientation since we are leaving on Monday It was fun and entertaining but very long. We learned a lot and made me feel a little more ready to go to Argentina.  Something really cool.  Since it was Halloween our bus driver who took us to and from west campus was wearing a fox costume!  Totally made me think of the music video "What does the fox say?" - totally made my day!

In-field training in preparation for going to Argentina!
Friday we went to the temple.  I love the temple! This morning was the last time I will be going to the temple in the USA for 18 months!  It was my favorite temple day yet.  I received so much peace and comfort that I needed before heading to the mission field.  I was comforted and I know that I'm ready to go.  I may not know every trick in the book or and expert at Spanish but it's time for me to go and serve Heavenly Father's Children in Buenos Aires Argentina.  When we left the temple there were two old men protesting outside of the temple.  They were yelling at us that we needed to run away as fast as we could from the Mormon Church.  I wanted to talk to them and share with them my testimony but I knew they wouldn't listen to what I had to say, so I just wished them a good day and continued on my way.  It's so sad that people feel like they had to tear other people down just because they don't believe in the same things or are different.  We are all children of our Heavenly Father and he loves us and wants him to return back to live with him.  Why can't we just all respect each other and show love for each other?  The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints doesn't attack other people because they aren't members.  We lift everyone up and serve and help others because that's what Christ would have done.  We need to love everyone and serve each other and lift each other up.  Its called charity, the pure love of Christ.

Well I guess that is it from the MTC.  Not sure when my next post will be since I don't know when my preparation day will be in Argentina.  (Editorial Comment - Preparation day is a designated day during the week in which missionaries take care of house keeping chores, write letters home, do laundry, etc. so the rest of the week they can focus on their missionary labors.)  So......... hasta luego and vaya con Dios!   Hermana Allison Scarlett
Missionary Bear from my SVU family - He will be sharing my mission experience with me.
Here he is doing group study with my district. Watch for more pictures of him!

MTC Post 3

No Visa Waiting - I'm going straight to Argentina on November 4th!!!!!

Jumping for Joy - No Visa Waiting!
Argentina - HERE WE COME!!!!!
Editorial Comment:  Many missionaries going to Argentina and some going to other South American countries do not receive their visas from that country by the time they finish their training at the Missionary Training Center.  If this is the case, these missionaries are reassigned to missions in the United States where they work until their visas arrive.  Alec Dawson, Allison's cousin was in Brownsville Texas for 4 months waiting for his visa.  He recently received it and has made it to his field of labor to which he was called, Salta Argentina.  As Allison prepared for her mission, we took the mindset that she too would have to be a Visa Waiter; however, we busted our buts getting her paperwork done quickly then have prayed fervently, if it was the will of the Lord, that she would go directly to her field of labor.  She must be needed because the doors have been opened for her to go directly to Argentina!  Now back to Hermana Scarlett's adventures this week :)

My district on Move Day!
So this week we moved to the MTC west campus and I LOVE IT!!!!!  It's so open and free and relaxed and the food is amazing. We are living in apartments and we have gym time right outside our apartment where there are basketball hoops and a sand volleyball court - pretty sweet and super fun! And I've seen Elder George like 5 times because he lives over here too :)  So yeah life is good here :)

On Sunday we did our temple walk and were taking pictures and there was a small group of 13 yr old girls and they asked if they wanted to take a picture with us and send it to our parents.  Of course we said yes!  They were so adorable.

Those tender mercies of the Lord messengers!
Editorial Comment from Mom:  Little did these young girls know, I was a little bit - okay a lot bit - homesick for conversation with Allison.  No so much her presence but the chats we had on the phone while she was at college.  Late Sunday evening while I was bemoaning my inability to talk with Allison, my phone chimed that I had a text.  It was from a number I didn't recognize and it said "Allison said to tell you to be good dirt and that she loves you!"  Attached was a picture of Allison with a bunch of young girls.  First reaction was melting heart and tears.  I knew the message had come from Allison because only she, Sara and Johnny use our little catch phrase "be good dirt."  Then I thought "who is this and how did this person get to see Allison??????"  So I texted back, "Thank you! Who is this?"  I get a message back - "My name is Kaitlyn and me and my friends live behind the Provo temple.  We decided to go walk around the temple and ran into a bunch of missionaries.  We thought it would be fun to take pictures and text them to their parents with a message from their missionary."  That message came when I needed it most - any earlier and it wouldn't have meant as much.  Coincidence that those girls just happen to walk to the temple on the same day and at the same time that Allison was there? that Allison just randomly pick those words to say?  that the message reached me when I needed it most?  NO!  It was a very sweet tender mercy from the Lord who orchestrated these little events and meetings so a mother would feel the comfort and love from her daughter and her Heavenly Father she needed to feel in the moment she needed it most.

On Monday we tried to do an apple orange diet.  It was supposed to cleanse you and make you feel better.  I was like why not so for breakfast I had 2 apples and I was starving!  I was like how am i going to do this?!?  Then I realized i couldn't and resolved to eat normal food for lunch.  I wasn't the only one to cave.  We ALL did.  It was pretty funny.

Me and ALL my stuff on Move Day!
On Tuesday we moved.  It was interesting trying to pack and move all of my stuff.  I will definitely be sending some stuff home. That afternoon we were having class and we were taking a break when I looked out the window I saw Steven walking by with his companion, so I grabbed my companion and ran outside to talk to him.  He was way excited that we were on the same campus now.

Hermana Scarlett :)
On Wednesday, we had a lesson with a faux investigator, Luis.  In our past lessons with him, he was frustrating me with all his questions and I didn't have all the answers.  I was trying to help him but I didn't know how.  But on Wednesday we had such an amazing lesson and he really opened up and I was able to work with him to resolve his concerns.  I know he'll get baptized but it's going to take some time.

On Thursday, which was yesterday, I don't remember what we did but it was good.  Oh wait I remembered something! So every district does a musical number in church before they leave and we are performing the EFY medley but we rearranging it a bit to make it more of a missionary spanish song.  It's way amazing and I'm accompanying it.  It's so amazing to be able to play a piece of music that I know.  One of the best feelings ever - I love the piano so much!

Friday was P-Day and since West Campus is so amazing they let us walk over to this place called Brigham's Landing where there is a cupcake store, a jamba juice, a hamburger place, a cheesesteak place, and lots of fun stuff.  So we walked over and explored and it felt so good to be out and about.

We all got travel plans straight to Argentina!
WE ALSO GOT OUR TRAVEL PLANS AND WE'RE GOING STRAIGHT TO ARGENTINA!!!!!!!!!    I'm a tad bit excited!!!  We fly out on November 4th to Atlanta and then fly straight to Buenos Aires.  5 of the missionaries in my zone flying to Atlanta and have a 3.5 hour layover there but Elder Johnson and I have a different flight to Atlanta and we only have a 20 minute layover!!!! Then we all get on the same plane to Buenos Aires with like a bajillion other missionaries - us and visa waiters who got their visas!  Since 5 of the missionaries will be in the Atlanta airport for 3.5 hours and I only have 20 min, they said they would try Bojangles since I rave about it being so good.  They also better buy me a large fry so that I can have the best fries in the world one more time before I leave the USA for 18 months.  So yeah today was a good day.

Challenge to Readers

Hello Readers of My Blog!

At a recent Sunday evening meeting, Elder Bednar, one of the Twelve Apostles, issued a challenge that I would like to extend to everyone reading my mission blog.  The challenge is to read the Book of Mormon, Another Testament of Jesus Christ with a gospel topic prayerfully in mind.  Topic suggestions included Faith, Repentance, Charity/Love, Jesus Christ, Attributes of Jesus Christ, Word from Jesus Christ, Commandments/Covenants, the Holy Ghost/Spirit, Obedience and its blessings.  The list can go on but select a topic you want to learn more about or of which you want to gain a personal testimony.  As you read, mark all the passages and phrases that relate to your chosen topic.  Elder Bednar then promised that as you do this, your testimony and personal conversion to the gospel will strengthen.

I have two paperback copies of the Book of Mormon to do this challenge.  My first time reading I'm prayerfully focusing on Faith, Commandments/Covenants and the Holy Ghost/Spirit.  I have a different color I'm using to mark each topic.  I LOVE this challenge because I'm paying more attention to what I am reading and how it applies to my life.  As I've been doing this, my testimony of the Book of Mormon has grown so much.  I absolutely love that book!  So I challenge you to do this too and I promise your testimony of the Book of Mormon and your relationship with Jesus Christ, our Savior, will grow stronger and your knowledge of the gospel and the plan of salvation with grow so much!

Love,
Hermana Scarlett

Editorial Comment:  The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints believes in additional scripture call The Book of Mormon, Another Testament of Jesus Christ.  We believe this book was written by ancient prophets here in the Americas at the same time the old and new testaments were being written in Jerusalem and surrounding areas.  When studied side by side with the Holy Bible, the two together provide a complete and unequivocal witness of Jesus Christ, his divine role as our Savior and Redeemer, and our ability to take hold of His atoning sacrifice to overcome our sins, stumbling blocks and trials.  In the introduction of The Book of Mormon it is stated that "a man [woman] would get nearer to God by abiding by its precepts, than by any other book."

To this, I personally testify as I have studied this book along with the Holy Bible and as a result feel I have an intimate relationship with my Father in Heaven and His Son, Jesus Christ. This knowledge and relationship has brought me great peace, comfort and direction as the storms and trials of life appear.  I will accept this challenge and hope you will do so too.  If you do not have a copy of the Book of Mormon and would like one, free of charge, click here.            Audene Scarlett

Contact Info - Updated APRIL 2014

FROM THE MISSION OFFICE:  DO NOT SEND PACKAGES TO MISSIONARIES IN ARGENTINA!!!

Email Address:  allison.scarlett@myldsmail.net

Letters and Cards:
Allison has requested hard copy letters whenever possible because she physically has them and can reread them whenever she wants.  She cannot print out emails so can only read them during the weekly hour or so she is on a computer.  Additionally, the church has strict limits on what is sent through the pouch mail system and how it is sent.

Updated  To send a letter via church pouch:
Postcards or one-page, single sided correspondence only (cannot use envelopes).
Instructions:  lay letter, blank side down.  Fold bottom of letter about 1/3 way up the page and crease.  Fold top to the bottom of the first fold and crease.  Secure the long side with two pieces of tape about one inch from each end, but do not seal the ends.  In the top left corner, write you name and return address.  Affix first class postage in the top right corner.  In the middle address to missionary as follows:

Hermana Allison Scarlett
Argentina Buenos Aires North Mission
POB 30150
Salt Lake City, UT 84130-01510

Do not include anything - no exceptions!  Why - too many people tried to send things in these letters when the church explicitly asked for no enclosures - this is a rule of the pouch system and the church almost lost their pouch services because folks abused it.

Suggest you write your letter through DearElder.com which is sent through the pouch system.  It is free and faster than mailing the letter to the church to go into the pouch.  Every Monday morning, DearElder.com prints out your letter and delivers (tri folded and taped) to church pouch system.

To mail letter/card directly -
